Coco Gauff has made history by becoming the youngest player to win a WTA 1000 title, after defeating Karolina Muchova in the final of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. The 15-year-old American, who is ranked 67th in the world, beat Muchova 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (4) in a thrilling three-set match that lasted two hours and 45 minutes.
Gauff had already made history at this tournament by becoming the youngest player to reach a WTA 1000 final since Martina Hingis in 1997. She also became the first teenager to reach a WTA 1000 final since Caroline Wozniacki in 2009. But with her victory over Muchova, Gauff has now become the youngest player ever to win a WTA 1000 title.
The match was an intense battle between two players who had never faced each other before. Both Gauff and Muchova played aggressively throughout, with both players hitting powerful groundstrokes and going for their shots. In the end, it was Gauffs mental strength that proved decisive as she held her nerve in the deciding set tiebreak to clinch victory.
Gauffs victory is yet another milestone for her remarkable career so far. She burst onto the scene last year when she reached the fourth round of Wimbledon as a qualifier aged just 15 years old. Since then she has gone from strength to strength, reaching two Grand Slam quarterfinals and winning her first WTA title earlier this year at Linz. Now with her first WTA 1000 title under her belt, Gauff looks set to become one of tennis biggest stars for years to come.
